Kuching is the Malay word for “cat” and the city is a cat-lovers paradise! There are cat statues placed all over town, giving this historical city a unique twist. Kuching is home to indigenous tribes and is the best place to connect with how life once was in Malaysia; you can take classes to learn weaving, bamboo carving, and more. If the culture and history aren’t enough to draw in visitors, the fact that Kuching sits along a beautiful river makes visits that much more memorable.

Hidden among the trees, the Pinnacles of Gunung Mulu in Malaysia rise like mystical needles into the sky. These impressive rock formations are largely untouched by human hands and a challenge for adventurers. The Pinnacles are the result of centuries of limestone erosion and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A journey here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will never forget.

Traditionally a small fishing village named Api-Api, Kota Kinabalu is now the capital city of Sabah in Malaysia. The city is entirely walkable; it only takes about an hour to walk from one side of it to the other. Along the way, you’ll get glimpses into the fishing village that used to be, coupled with the lively city it is today. While visiting Kota Kinabalu, you’ll be mere minutes away from tropical beaches and only a couple of hours away from Mt. Kinabalu, the famous mountain this city is named after.

Deforestation and logging practices have been absolutely devasting to the Orangutan population. Many of the adult Orangutans are killed during these harmful activities and babies are taken captive. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia grants these intelligent animals a second chance; they’ll take any Orangutan in and help them get back to the lives they once had. The Centre rehabilitates the primate population and allows visitors to come take a look. Fortunately, there are very strict rules regarding where visitors can go, as they don’t want people to interfere with the rehabilitation of these animals.

Kinabatangan River safaris are planned with a tour company that will take you to all the best spots for wildlife. On the river, you can see some incredibly diverse wildlife such as elephants, crocodiles, snakes, vibrant birds, and the infamous Proboscis Monkey. You’ll also see some extremely biodiverse plant life along Malaysia’s second-largest river. Due to heavy flooding during the rainy season, the Kinabatangan River becomes a swampland where all types of living creatures thrive.

The sparkle and turquoise tones of the water hint at all magic that sits beneath the surface. In the area known as the Semporna Archipelago, there are multiple small islands clustered together that are home to some of the most majestic sea life in existence today. The Semporna Archipelago in Malaysia is a diver’s paradise, but even if you’re not a diver, this is not a stop to gloss over. Each tiny island offers a different draw, but all islands focus on appreciating the ocean that laps up onto their shores.
