Visiting the surreal, rugged, and inhospitable Skeleton Coast in Northern Namibia is a must for any bucket-list travelers. Named for the many sun-bleached whale and seal bones that wash up onto the shore and the skeletal remains of wrecked ships that litter the shores, Skeleton Coast is a dramatic landscape wrapped in danger, mystery, and intrigue. Part of one of the oldest deserts in the world, the Skeleton Coast is a great place for photographers, experienced surfers, and adventurers who want a stab at this hostile and desolate, yet all-around enthralling location.

Observe thousands of fur seals at Cape Cross Seal Reserve

See an endless sea of small, brown seals that occupy the stunning coastline of Namibia at the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. A bountiful colony of the fascinating Cape fur seals located only 80 miles north of Swakopmund, visitors can see more than 100,000 fur seals bask in the warm sun along the Skeleton Coast in a display of pure bliss and refuge. From the reserve's raised walkway you can observe as the fur seals fight, play, and conduct daily business in their colony – an all-around enchanting sight.

Experience the breathtaking, striking, and endless landscape of Sandwich Harbor

Picture large, imposing, copper dunes that slope down into the deep cerulean ocean with white foam waves and you’ve got a pretty good image of Sandwich Harbor. A landscape of extremes, Sandwich harbor is striking, surreal, and breathtaking. Sandwich Harbor was once a fishing and trade port but now exists as an important wetland to the bird populations of Namibia. This stunning landscape is devoid of any human presence or infrastructure making the views truly one of the Earth's greatest treasures and a sure gem on any Swakopmund itinerary.

Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay is Namibia's second largest city and remains a major fishing center for the country, with a harbour that has always played an important role in Namibia's development. Although the city itself doesn't have much to offer to travelers, the Walvis Bay lagoon is an important wetland and one of the largest breeding grounds for sea and land birds in southern Africa. There are over 50 different species, including pelicans, cormorants, and flamingos. You can watch them from land, but we recommend a boat tour: besides the birds, you can also expect to see dolphins and seals and have a beautiful view of the coast line.
