Twyfelfontein Namibia, Northern Namibia

Twyfelfontein, Namibia has been inhabited by people for thousands of years because of the bountiful spring that gives the area its name. Twyfelfontein or “Spring of Doubt” has given life to the plants and animals of the area for years, creating a paradisal landscape. The area was proven to be abundant and so tribes of San people settled in the area followed by the Khoikhoi tribe which would ultimately name the area ǀUi-ǁAis or ‘jumping waterhole’.

The area is surrounded by sandstone table mountains that provided the tribes with the perfect tool needed to depict their day-to-day life and the many fascinating wildlife they came into contact with while at Twyfelfontein. Today, scientists have discovered 2,500 groups of rock engravements from iconic imagery (animals, mythical creatures, humans), pictograms (geometric symbols), and functional engravings (day-to-day useful engravings for life and entertainment).

To see these rock-engraved depictions up close and personal you’ll need to hire a local guide as the site is a UNESCO protected world heritage site and has been protected by Namibia since the 1950s.
