Spitzkoppe Namibia, Central Namibia

The iconic Spitzkoppe granite peaks are located 120 km northeast of the coastal city of Swakopmund and sit in the Namib desert. A popular climbing location and a rich spot for history and culture, the Spitzkoppe have long been the object of human attention.

The peaks are estimated to be about 120 million years old, and some cave paintings located on the surface of Spitzkoppe dates people being there from about 2000-4000 years ago. One of the main drawing features of Spitzkoppe can easily be traced to the fascinating geological structures sprinkled around the mountain. Smooth, rounded boulders and large arches can be found that add a layer of mystery and discovery to the area.

The Spitzkoppe mountain peaks are a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and mountaineers. With many opportunities for rock climbing, both at a beginner level as well as expert, many climbers make their way to this mountain that is located between the skeleton coast of Namibia and the Namib-Nauklaft National Park.

However, if you’re not one for climbing, there is still plenty to do at the nearby Spitzkoppe lodge that offers some gorgeous views of the nearby peaks. Private lodges will have you right up against some of the interesting rock formations as you take time to relax and soak in the nearby sights or do one of their many privately led tours either on foot or by bicycle.

Not to mention that the ancient Bushmen cave paintings that you can see are a wonderful testament to the rich culture of the people who have dwelled among these peaks for thousands of years.
