Semuc Champey Guatemala, Central Highlands

You can find Semuc Champey located 11 km south of the small town of Lanquín Guatemala. Famed for its blue-green pools and 300m limestone bridge, this hidden gem is not an easy destination to get to. Surrounded by densely forested mountains the only way to get to this secret paradise is a grueling 2 ½ hours hike or taking a turbulent 4x4 ‘taxi’. The recommendation is that you hike the way there but any challenge that you encounter during the off-road hike is more than worth it for the stunning scenery that greets you when you arrive.

Semuc Champey greets you with open arms and a refreshing series of six different pools encrusted with limestone. The water flows from the Río Cahabón, and is fresh and safe to swim in. The water temperature is warm but still a wonderful retreat from the hot Guatemalan sun.

The surrounding scenery is densely packed forest making for an even more secluded and hidden gem atmosphere and the pools are rarely packed with tourists, so you have ample space to leisurely swim. Within the pools, you will find a sandy bottom with some larger rock formations beneath the surface which you can easily see with the clean and clear water. The water at Semuc Champey is so clear that you can see straight to the bottom and even watch the fishes that occupy the pools swim around as languidly as you.

Semuc Champey is perfect for the solo adventurist, or if you’re looking for a more organized adventure, the tour group junkie. Either way, you are guaranteed to enjoy every minute of your time in this hidden paradise.
