Lake Atitlan Guatemala, Western Highlands

Lake Atitlán is situated in a large dip between volcanic mountains. Its deepest depth is 320 meters deep, which means that you can adventurously scuba dive in the lake. Although there are some areas in the lake to avoid swimming in – the water near the larger towns and cities is a definite no-no – you can still plausibly swim in the lake at your own risk (the main concern being Cyanobacteria).

Every one of the 13 different towns and cities has its own atmosphere, group of residents, and appeal and each is a gem to be discovered. From slow-paced San Marcos, the ‘hippie town’ to the backpacker's dream of San Pedro all the way to the exciting ex-pat mixed with the local community in Panajachel.

You can find a large variety of water activities and hikes in and around the area, as well as delicious restaurants and comfy accommodations.

In order to get to Lake Atitlán, there is a tourist shuttle from Antigua, Xela, or Guatemala City that can be arranged via your accommodation – do keep in mind that the journey may take longer than expected as the shuttle moves from place to place to pick-up and drop people off. The shuttle will eventually take you and drop you off in Pana and depending on what your destination is, you may need a boat for the last leg of the journey (some villages are only accessible through boat).

The next option is a ‘Chicken Bus’ (an American school bus painted brightly) which is stuffed full of tourists and locals. You’ll be lucky to find a seat and the journey slightly more dangerous, but you will not be lacking in entertainment. To get between villages you can boat, hike, or drive via Tuk-Tuk or back of a pick-up truck.
