Río Dulce offers a unique mix of culture and many beautiful nature-focused activities for you to enjoy. Stretching across 43 kilometers of land in Northern Guatemala, Río Dulce flows from Guatemala’s largest lake, Lago Izabal, and straight through to the Caribbean Sea. This gem is multicultural with many residents coming from Guatemala, the indigenous Mayan tribes, and the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna people. Along the 'Sweet River', you will find grass-roofed houses that stretch onto the water with docks for the local boats.

Different hotels, hostels, and huts line the river at various points, all ranging in prices to accommodate every budget. You can also find quite a diverse selection of restaurants and cafes along the river and in the small river-side towns. Transportation options include Tuk Tuk, bus, or riverboat (the most popular and the costliest).

One way you can explore is to take a river cruise from Livingston at the mouth of the river of the Caribbean Sea, all the way up to Lago de Izabal. You can stop along the way to see some of the sights like San Felipe de Laura or hike to the ruins, and throughout it all, you’ll be treated to sights of the diverse wildlife that call Río Dulce home. Lagoons house manatees and the trees house howler monkeys and birds, wherever you go along the Río Dulce, you will be sure to see some amazing wildlife.
