Monterrico Guatemala, Pacific Coast

Monterrico Guatemala has been a favorite destination for tourists, locals, and Nomads alike as they flock to the best pacific side beach on the western coast of Guatemala. You can find black, volcanic sand beaches, a laid-back beach town vibe, and upgraded infrastructure that gets better every year. Originally a small fishing village, Monterrico is quickly picking up steam to becoming a must-visit area for tourists. The town boasts of a large nature reserve flocked with wildlife, while the surrounding area has winding mangroves and lagoons that you can boat in. And to top it all off, Monterrico has a black sand beach with powerful waves that has quickly become one of the best beaches in Guatemala.

One of Monterrico’s most attractive features for visitors is the eco-tourism available to you to participate in. Monterrico’s beaches is a prime nesting location for Green Sea, Leatherback, and Olive Ridley turtles and in an effort to preserve the turtle population as well as their natural nesting habitats, there are volunteer opportunities available where you can protect turtle egg nests and help the hatchlings get to the ocean.

In terms of stays and accommodations there is a selection of a few small beachside hotels/hostels fitting of penny savers to the more luxurious travelers but do be aware that there aren’t any high-end resort-like hotels available as Monterrico is developing. As for restaurants and cafes, there are about a dozen or so different options spread around the small beach town.
