El Paredon Guatemala, Pacific Highlands

For the most part, El Paredon remains an unknown location for the droves of tourists that flock to Guatemala each year, preserving its idyllic laidback qualities and ‘a world away from civilization’ feeling. This hidden paradise is situated on a black sand southern coast and offers gorgeous views of the surf. With only one paved road running through the town, most of the land is undeveloped yet well maintained with lush green grass, intentionally planted trees, and grass-topped huts and pavilions that offer shade from the hot Guatemalan sun.

Originally a small fishing village, this coastal town is now welcoming more and more tourists to boost the economy in the village and surrounding area. Hostels, small open-air hotels, and locally run shops are opening to accommodate the influx of surfers, backpackers, and nomads, and exponential growth is expected in the coming years. Currently, however, the small tucked away town is still an oasis away from the world with only a select few Wi-Fi spots available, and only a few air-conditioned hostel/hotel options – so you can still unplug and enjoy true relaxation here in an increasingly uncommon way.
