Fish River Canyon Namibia, Southern Namibia

Located in the south of the stunning country of Namibia is an impressive expanse of the canyon stretching over 160 km in length (and 27 km in width) along Fish River, the longest river in Namibia. The enthralling sights into the 550-meter-deep canyon have captivated the hearts of people visiting Namibia for many years.

Formed along ancient tectonic fault lines, Fish River Canyon began its transformation into the world's second-largest canyon over a billion years ago. The rocks were carved by years of erosion, continental shifting, and even the elusive glacial formations of the supercontinent Gondwana. Today, this canyon spans across the southern half of Namibia and is the second most visited attraction in this sunny country.

One of the best ways to explore the rocky, endless landscapes stretching along the canyon is to do the famous 5-day hike that spans 86 km and ends in a lovely hot spring. The hiking season for this popular bucket-list destination for adventurers and nature-lovers is between May 1st and September 15th every year. Hiking outside of these months is prohibited due to the heat that the Canyon experiences during the rest of the year.

To preserve the park and control traffic and civilian clutter only 30 people are allowed into the canyon for hiking per day, meaning that you’ll need to book in advance if you want to complete the hike.

The hike itself begins in Hobas, which you can access from the Hobos campsite or a shuttle bus drive from Ai-Ais. From there you will descend into the canyon where you will follow the river throughout the canyon terrain. You will be treated to gorgeous views, hot springs, and some great sandy beaches to take a dip in and relax after a day of hiking.
