Christchurch New Zealand, South Island

Christchurch, located in the Canterbury region, is often described as being the rejuvenated Southern Hub of New Zealand. Filled with innovative art, tech, and historic architecture, visitors are enthralled by Christchurch’s vibrant energy. Christchurch was founded by the Canterbury society in the 1860s and quickly grew to become one of New Zealand’s important industrial sectors. In 2010, Christchurch was hit with a large, magnitude 7 earthquake which destroyed hundreds of buildings within the city, but claimed no lives. Less than 6 months later, another lesser earthquake hit the city and caused even more damage than the first. Over 180 people perished in the second earthquake.

Throughout the past decade restoration efforts have been made for many parts of the city such as a temporary replacement for the Anglican cathedral. It is because of these efforts that Christchurch has been dubbed with the title of ‘revitalized. Many visitors enjoy this revitalized hub and the many sights and activities available; the more popular attractions include Regent Street, a pedestrian mall with colorful pastel storefronts, the many tramways across the city which you can ride, and the large spaces of greenery. The Botanic Gardens are definitely worth a visit if you enjoy gardens, water features, and picturesque spots.
