Glacier Country New Zealand, South Island

Located on the western edge of the South Island of New Zealand, Glacier Country has remained a unique geological anomaly for its closeness to the sea. Not only is it located near the sea, but it also happens to be intersected from the Tasman Sea by rainforests, home to a myriad of exotic birds. This diverse geography makes a perfect stage for the intricate ecosystem that calls Glacier Country home. A few endangered species such as the Kaka, Okarito Brown Kiwi, and Kakariki live in this dramatic habitat, and although hard to spot, the opportunity to see one is a gift in of itself.

Some famous spots to check out while in Glacier Country include Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier.

Fox Glacier was named after New Zealand's Prime Minister of 1869-1872 Sir William Fox. Consisting of a fast-moving glacier and a nearby small village, Fox Glacier descends from the southern Alps into a rainforest and is also near the mirror-like Lake Matheson. With Glow worm caves and a neat selection of cafes and restaurants available to you, Fox Glacier is a wonderful stop when in the area.

Franz Josef Glacier is located 5 km away from the small, hospitable town of the same name. Originally explored in 1865, this glacier offers a range of outdoor activities well suited to adventurous travelers. In the town of Franz Josef, you can also find comfortable accommodations, cafes, and restaurants. There are also hikes, waterfalls, and lakes to be explored nearby.

In order to extensively tour the glaciers, you’ll need to book a tour. Depending on which tour you choose, you can get to the glaciers via hiking or via helicopter. The hikes onto the glaciers are agreed as being a once in a lifetime experience, and the helicopter tours will save you a difficult hike for the same terrific view.
