Kaikoura New Zealand, South Island

Kaikoura, coming from the Māori word ‘kai’ (food) and ‘Koura’ (Crayfish), is set between the craggily, Kaikoura Mountain ranges and the Pacific Ocean. This incredible scenery is made even more stunning by the very active marine life that coast the shores of this small town. Due to the geological structures and the steep underwater shelf that mix both warm water from the south and colder water from the north, the ocean near Kaikoura is the perfect feeding ground for a myriad of sea life.

There is plenty to do while in the Kaikoura area, for those looking for rest and relaxation and for those looking for some awesome adventure both on land and in the water. Boats take tourists out by groups to see the playful sperm whales, quick dolphins, and marine birds all interact together in their natural habitat – and with migration patterns of different whale species, this activity is available year-round!

If you want to get up close and personal with some of these amazing creatures, or you just want to see some of the world’s most beautiful reef systems, then going scuba diving is a must.

If you want to spend some time on land, or are just looking for some peace and quiet, then visiting the lavender fields, or getting a massage, or visiting a spa for some beauty treatments will be up your alley. There is also a great deal of outdoor activities such as hikes, walks, mountain biking, and quadding available in and out of the area.
