Trincomalee is a vibrant beachside city set against a backdrop of cerulean sea that provides a taste of off-the-beaten-track travel on the east side of Sri Lanka. With a smaller tourism industry, you will get a true feel of day-to-day life in Sri Lanka, but not without comfort – many beach hotels line the sandy shore of this city that has some great nightlife and pub-crawling options for travelers.

Throughout history, the port of Trincomalee was utilized by merchants, traders, and militia from different countries because of the harbors' strategic positioning and deep water. It was the sight of a Japanese bombing in the Second World War, multiple battles for control of the harbor, and the main pathway for war-torn refugees during war times – all while being passed through the colonial hands of the British, Dutch, and French.

Today, visitors can expect to find many tours for whale-watching, exploring old Fort Frederick, and the ancient Hindu temples. While you’re not touring around you can grab some fresh seafood and a beer at one of the many beach bars along the shore of the harbor.
