Although Rabat is Morocco’s official capital city, you will find a much more subdued, clean-lined, and charming city than what you’d expect after exploring its sister cities. With swaying palms lining clean boulevards that aren’t packed wall to wall, you will find this Moroccan imperial city a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of other imperial cities.

With a distinctively French influence within its architecture and design, Rabat will transport you to an unnamed European city rather than a North African Metropolis. Rabat is known as an all-around ‘easy-going’ city, evident in its calm-mannered locals and generally slow pace of life.

When you begin your exploration of Rabat a good starting place is an old town. Mostly ruins now, Rabat’s Medina still holds some historic importance as it houses ruins of the Hassan Mosque and Mausoleum of Mohammed V. The stunning mausoleum overlooks the fascinating ruins of the Mosque in a breathtaking display of simplicity and delicate detail.

Next, you’ll want to head over to the Kasbah des Oudaïas - an ancient medina dating back to the 12th century. Lined with stalls set along the white and blue colored walls leading down to the waters, the Kasbah is a delight to explore due to the lack of suffocating crowds often found in other Medinas.

If you want a break from the ancient, then take a trip over to The Ville Nouvelle or ‘the new town’ where the distinctive French architecture that Rabat is known for rears its' head. With Parisian cafes, eye-catching street art, and a European-Esque square, The Ville Nouvelle is an intoxicating district that you’ll surely fall in love with.
