Witness the ancient craft of tanning in a Fez Tannery

Located within Fez’s ancient Medina is a series of tanneries that are worth touring. One of Fez’s most iconic sights to see, visiting a tannery to witness the ancient craft at work is a must while in the oldest imperial city. The process of tanning and dyeing using the historic methods and tools is witness to an important facet of Morocco’s culture and is fascinating to see in person. You can either book a tour or venture there independently, although we recommend having a guide with you for a more fulfilling experience.

Day trip out to see ancient roman ruins - Volubilis

Volubilis is a well-preserved archeological site that houses hidden, ancient roman ruins in the middle of Morocco’s farmland. Seemingly random and startling, the massive columns are reminiscent of the ruins you would see while exploring Italy. A UNESCO protected site since 1997 these ruins speak to an ancient Roman city in North Africa. The site is easily accessible from Fez either through a tour operator or a private car and is a perfect day-trip destination.

Experience serenity in the countryside in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, known as just Zerhoun, is a small town tucked away into the lush hills at the foot of Mount Zerhoun. Less than 3 km away from the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun can be combined with the ruins for a fantastic day or two trips from nearby Fez. The town is filled with white-washed buildings and is a deeply religious spot – so religious that non-Muslims were finally permitted to visit in 1912. The town is laid-back and offers a slice of serenity to any who visit.
