Take a Trip to Weligama Beach: A Surf Beginners Paradise

Weligama is a uniquely attractive bay that features a beautiful, long sandy beach and gentle waves ideal for beginner surfers. Located on the south coast of Sri Lanka, not far from Mirissa, Weligama Beach attracts thousands of young travelers each year and boasts a blend of a popular beach resort and a vibrant fishing village. Travelers mainly visit due to the many surf schools, beach bars, and nightclubs that fill the beach. Travelers can expect to find some of the best surf waves for beginners, snorkeling, and coral watching in Sri Lanka.

Uncover the secrets of Secret Beach

Unlike the name might imply, this beach is unfortunately not much of a secret anymore. After letting a tuk-tuk take you to Secret Beach, you'll find yourself on a small (but busy) secluded beach with a cute beach bar. If you prefer to arrive before it gets busy, we recommend going early in the morning - that way, you have the shallow lagoon all by yourself. As the lagoon is protected from the waves, you can safely splash around and relax in the water. Should there be no place left under the swaying palm trees lining the beach, you can rent sun loungers directly on site.

Instagram loves Coconut Tree Hill, will you too?

Coconut Tree Hill is located on the Eastern side of Mirissa Beach, about a 20-min walk from the main beach area or a short tuk tuk ride away. As the name suggests, it is a hill with tall coconut trees swaying in the breeze, overlooking Mirissa Bay. The beautiful view makes it a great place for taking photos or watching the sunrise or sunset. You may even get lucky and spot a sea turtle in the water below. Don't expect to have the place to yourself though, it is often very busy.

Escape the crowds at Tangalle Beach

Being a fishing village at heart, Tangalle is considered to be off the beaten path for most travelers, but that might change soon. The beautiful beaches that stretch for kilometers leave the few tourists who make it here feel quite alone - which makes it the perfect destination if you want to avoid the crowds. There is one downside, strong currents short of the shore allow swimming only at a few designated areas.
