Appreciate religious diversity with a visit to Batu Caves

Batu Caves is a major attraction near Kuala Lumpur. Carved out of a large limestone hill, these caves are an important place of worship for Hindus. It’s actually a Hindu temple with many idols and statues erected in and around different caves. There are three main caves and various smaller caves in the area. The largest cave is Cathedral Cave which houses many Hindu Shrines. There is also an Art Gallery Cave and a Museum Cave which offer a deeper look into Hindu tradition.

Show appreciation for Malaysian independence by visiting Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square, also called Dataran Merdeka, symbolizes Malaysia’s independence from British colonization in 1957. It is here that the Union Jack flag was lowered and replaced with the flag of Malaysia. Today, the square still holds a flagpole with Malaysia’s flag proudly flying almost 100 meters above the ground. There are many celebrations and national holiday events held in the square, so it can be the perfect place to experience Malaysia’s culture. Even on non-event days, this is a beautiful place to visit as it’s filled with serene gardens and water features throughout the grounds.

Leave the hustle of KL behind you and visit the beautifully located Chin Swee temple complex

Located in the Genting Highlands, the Chin Swee temple complex is a mere hour away from the city. Take the cable car from the base station at Gohtong Jaya to the mountain top and enjoy the outstanding views.

Visit Masjid Jamek, a stunning Mosque and the oldest Islamic place of worship

Built in 1907, Masjid Jamek was the primary center of worship for the Muslim community in Kuala Lumpur until 1965. The mosque is still operational today; Muslims regularly use it as a place of worship, but visitors are also allowed inside to marvel at its beauty. Be sure to be respectful of Muslim traditions while inside; visitors are asked to dress conservatively, and everyone must remove their shoes prior to entering the mosque. Non-Muslim visitors, especially women, may be given robes or headscarves upon entrance.

Petronas Twin Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers are the most iconic landmark in Kuala Lumpur. They were the world's highest buildings from 1998 to 2004, and they are still the world's tallest twin towers at  451.9 m (1,483 ft). Get up to the observation deck on the 86th floor for awe-inspiring views. Consider national holidays when planning a visit.
