Dunedin has plenty of stunning features with its coastal landscapes, rare wildlife, and uniquely European architecture. Established in 1848, Dunedin flourished as a Scottish settlement, and with the help of a gold rush and the building of a university quickly boomed into a wealthy city. The culmination of the Scottish influence is the statuesque Larnach castle settled in the hills of the Otago peninsula. Many of the Victorian and Edwardian structures in the city still line the streets and offer a unique aesthetic for Dunedin today. The Scottish heritage is still alive and well and can be explored in the museums dedicated to this European legacy.

Beside the museum, visitors can also find plenty of restaurants, nightlife, and activities in and around the city – and peculiar sights such as the steepest residential street in the world: Steep Street. You can see some rare wildlife such as fur seals and penguins on the beaches and visit the only Royal Albatross colony on the mainland.
