Set along the northeast corner of Namibia is a panhandle stretching between the countries of Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. This 280-mile, narrow stretch of gorgeous green land houses a bountiful number of game and few indigenous settlements making for an untouched, unspoiled piece of land. The Caprivi strip remained untouched for many years due to an enduring border war between the surrounding countries for the precious lush greenery and waterways.

The history surrounding this narrow strip of land is as odd as its shape. In a colonial trade, Caprivi was part of the spoils of a deal made between Germany and New Britain. This trade seemed fortuitous for the Germans in receiving Caprivi because of the river that runs through it, but their plans were made null by the forgotten Victoria falls, an astounding 355-foot fall to be exact, one of the biggest in the world. This then made Caprivi essentially useless to the colonial parties but has remained precious to the indigenous tribes in the area who became involved in border skirmishes for it.

The main attraction to Caprivi today is that it’s very much removed from the rest of the modern world. Only recently has tourism boomed in the area resulting in the sprouting up of a few hunter lodges. But even those are few and far between preserving the untamed beauty of the area.

Enjoying a safari in Caprivi really means living among the natural outdoors. Many of the lodges don’t have fences meaning that the copious amounts of wildlife living in the area are free to wander among the cabins and lodge.
