Best time to visit

Since Cuba is located within the tropical regions; it will come as no surprise that this island country experiences two main seasons, Wet and Dry. Although it is worth noting that since the country is long and skinny, the variance of whether between provinces is more obvious.

The Dry season usually begins in late November and lasts all winter through to the middle of April. During this season, you can expect temperatures to average around 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F) most days and the most precipitation you will get is around 3 inches.

The Wet season begins in May and lasts until October, and you can expect upwards of 7 inches of rain per month, and temperatures averaging around 30°C / 86°F and above. The particular months to know are August to October which is the wettest months due to it being hurricane season.

There really is no ‘best time’ to visit Cuba since you will find tropical warm temperatures in every season. If you're looking to avoid rain, then it's best to avoid the months between August and October when rain is heaviest, but even then, you'll still be able to enjoy everything that Cuba has to offer.

Getting around

Flying

Most travelers to Cuba arrive and depart at either José Martí International Airport in Havana or Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport in Varadero. Except when entering and leaving the country, you probably won't spend much time in the air. Although Cuba has a number of regional airports throughout the country, the safety record of Cuban airlines is poor and service is still limited after a fatal crash in 2018.

Trains

Although Cuba has a functioning rail system, trains are usually not the best way to get around. Especially if you're not traveling on the main line between Havana and Santiago de Cuba, trains tend to be slow and are often delayed or even cancelled. If you are interested, tickets can be purchased in person at the train stations.

Rental Car or Bike

Renting a car in Cuba is quite expensive (expect to pay around $100/day), and unless you want to go to the most remote parts of the country or are planning a big round trip, we usually advise against it. Apart from the poor road conditions and the lack of road signs and street lighting, it can be cheaper to take a taxi even for longer distances.

Buses

The most popular way to travel around Cuba is by bus. Víazul is the go-to operator among travelers, as the company has a reliable bus network that connects all major tourist destinations in the country. The buses are air-conditioned, reliable, and run on a fixed schedule with designated stops. It is usually advisable to buy tickets at least a few hours before departure.

Taxi & Last Mile

There is no shortage of taxi options in Cuba. Whether you take a state-owned yellow cab, a group taxi ("collectivo"), or one of the classic 1950s convertibles that Cuba is famous for, you will have no trouble getting around town. You can also arrange longer trips, just make sure to always agree on a fare before you get in.

Boats & Ferries

Apart from ferries (e.g., to cross the port in Havana or the Bahía de Cienfuegos) and day trips on the water (e.g., for diving), you will probably not spend much time on the water.
