Erg Chigaga Morocco, Saharan Morocco

Located within the hot sands of the Sahara Desert, Erg Chigaga is one of the two largest ergs – a sea of sand - in Morocco. Erg Chigaga is larger than its counterpart Erg Chebbi, but it has smaller sand dunes. Not that it is very noticeable when you’re ogling at the panoramic landscape from the top of one of Erg Chigaga’s sand dunes.

Another difference to note between Erg Chigaga and Erg Chebbi is that Erg Chigaga is a lot more remote. The nearest town from Erg Chigaga is 50 km away and the road is unpaved making tours less than enthusiastic to trek across the hot plateau. In fact, you can only access Erg Chigaga on 4x4 and it usually takes 2-3 hours to make it there.

Once you do make the trek to Erg Chigaga, however, you are treated with glorious wilderness and arresting displays of scenery. From your intimate and often luxurious camp, you can witness the breathtaking sunset as it lights up the surrounding sand dunes in gorgeous hues of orange and red before the night sky takes over. Because of the remoteness of Erg Chigaga, the milky way is incredibly visible and the night sky is as pure as anyone could ever hope to witness.
